Preparing for Winter? Here’s Some Tips to Declutter

It’s mid fall. You’ve spent the last two seasons buying stuff that you never knew you needed. With winter just round the corner, it’s important to start thinking about curating your space. Especially during the winter months, when you’re spending more time indoors and are less motivated to do anything. It’s important to make your space as relaxing and cozy as possible. It’s time to plan ahead and put some of your stuff into storage. Alluster can help you store your unnecessary items, from clothes and books to furniture and skis.

The Impact of Mess on Performance

The affect of clutter on your performance and productivity is well researched. We covered the ways that having a messy room can have negative impacts in the way you live your life here.

The first step is to decluttering is to review the things that you’ve bought in the last few months. Whether it be clothes, cooking supplies, books, etc. Make a list of the things you’ve purchased in the last few months. What have you bought that’s important to you? One helpful trick is to sort them into categories. When looking at your clothes, sort them into groups like coats, light jackets, heavy jackets, light sweaters, heavy sweaters. Then look at the stuff you already have and identify if you have multiple of the same ‘types’ of thing. Maybe you have three wooden spoons, it might be time to get rid of the one you bought back in college. Repeating this process once a season helps you from accumulating too much stuff and having the situation get out of control.

After you’ve sorted through your stuff, it’s time to organize them into three piles. Stuff you want to keep, stuff you want to put into storage, and stuff that you want to get rid of. Now of course, the stuff you’re going to get rid of is probably going to be pretty small. After all, you just got some of this stuff. Chances are, the “put into storage” pile is going to be pretty big, especially if you have multiples of the same thing. Alluster Storage can store a variety of items, from books to clothes and even bigger items. You can even add pictures and notes to track what goes into each box.

Put Away Your Summer Clothes

Living in a big city, it’s more likely than not that you’re living with limited closet space. This means it’s time to put away your summer clothes and keep only the essentials. Make room for your jackets and comfy sweaters. We can help you with this. Alluster Storage can help you keep all the stuff you’re not using immediately safely and cleanly with our tamper proof boxes. And if you have the sudden urge to wear that one floral print shirt, we can drop it off at your house within 24 hours.

Put Away Bulkier Items

Chances are, you’re going to be doing much less biking in the winter. While you may still want to use it in the last few days of beautiful fall weather, it’s soon going to be too cold to be whizzing down the street when the sidewalks are slippery and the wind is cutting through your coat. Alluster can even help store bigger items like bikes and furniture. If it looks like there’s going to suddenly be a warm week, we can get what you need back your stuff straight to your door.

Think About Your Goals For Next Year

With the new year just a few months away, it’s time to start thinking about your New Year goals. What do you want to achieve in this next year? What do you want to do different? Do you want to learn how to sew? Maybe you’d like to learn how to cook a specific kind of cuisine. Maybe you’d like to take up baking. Thinking about your goals for the next year will help you decide what you want to keep and what you want to put into storage. Put away the projects that you’ve done, like that book on knitting from two years ago along with the knitting needles and the bags of yarn. Putting your past projects into storage will give you more room in your apartment to focus on your resolutions in the upcoming year. Alluster can help you with all of this. If you suddenly have an urge to sew, we can help you get it back quickly and easily.
